Actively Away: Hands Off Social Media 😌✨
Strategies for content creation, without spending all your time on social media ⏳🤳
Owning a brand can be challenging, especially when juggling multiple responsibilities. 🥴 For brand owners and small teams wearing "many hats," managing social media content often feels like another full-time job—sometimes an unrewarding one. We understand the struggle and put together some tips to help you spend less time on the social media aspects (while still maximizing its benefits):
🗓️ Content Calendars: Use a content calendar so that you have a plan for what to post. Having a plan can help alleviate the stress of “what to post”, helping you move through the process more easily and quickly.
📆 Schedulers: Content Calendars can be easy to create on a regular calendar, but if you’re truly looking for a more hands-off social media approach, consider signing up for a scheduling platform like Later or Loomly.
🧩 Batches: Instead of creating entire posts at once, break them down into parts. Start by creating all your captions (or all your graphics) before moving onto the other element. This approach helps you stay focused on one task, and you'll become more efficient over time. If you're unsure where to begin with this process, here's our suggested order of operations:
Identify the days you want to post
Write your captions
Create your images (based around the captions)
Put it together & schedule it, make a draft or post it!
⏰ Time Limits: If you're enjoying content creation and seeing success but struggling to manage your research time, consider setting limits on social media apps. This can help concentrate your efforts, allowing you time for idea inspiration, while preventing social media from encroaching on other important business bits and pieces. You can do this in your device settings or within the app itself. If you don't see a limit option but still want to reduce research time, set a timer instead.
📍 Pinterest: If you’re feeling like Kate (above), and done with Instagram, TikTok, Facebook and the more mainstream social media platforms, consider creating content for Pinterest only. It’s great for businesses that have a strong visual component. Because of how Pinterest is set up, it does have an algorithm based on your interests and past pins, but the search runs more closely on SEO—so do your keyword research by looking up similar pins, and make sure to put those words in the descriptions and the alt text. ALWAYS make sure to add a link so people can click directly to you. Set aside time daily, weekly, or monthly to post pins or schedule pins without the loud chatter and dance trends on other platforms.
❗️ DON'T FORGET! If you're primarily contacted through social media, set up a notification system or email service to funnel those messages to a place you're already checking regularly (e.g., email, notifications via a scheduler, a smart spreadsheet, or Notion tools). This way, you'll spend less time switching between tabs, and social media will naturally fit into your schedule—rather than you changing your schedule for social media.
Remember, social media is inherently social—so engage on the platforms you value most. Ensure you have a system in place for people to contact you AND you'll be able to easily respond. If you need to, use limits or timers. We hope this saves you time, energy and has given you some useful strategies going forward. 🩵
