From the Runways to social media, there’s no way you haven’t seen the Subversive Fashion movement. 📣❗This micro-trend is all about adding a sense of utility 🧰 🧠 to an already casual article of clothing. High fashion designers have been deconstructing basics as the trend cycles make their rounds and people are taking note. An old sweatshirt could be cut, sewn, twisted, and ripped to fit your form.
TikTok influencers have been going viral for their new handcrafted pieces that showcase their individuality: what was a classic LBD suddenly appears with daring details… and so a “new” era begins. 👗✂️✨ You’ve likely seen a few of these on your FYP as users post their chic #OOTD with the recent Y2K aesthetic revival! ✌️📸😙 It only makes sense the do-it-yourself phenomenon made a comeback along with it.
Consumers are no longer searching for Brandy-Melville off-the-rack clothing (😴) with strict sizing standards. Subversive pieces can instead be created from items you already own, yet with the new advantage of kitschy shapes to contour your specific body; quite literally anyone can participate. That being said, is Subversive Fashion here to stay? 🤔 Though nothing in *fashion-*land is promised, huge shifts like this usually spark newfound confidence for trendsetters when it’s time for something fresh.
3 Ways to Get Started 💡
👚 Get creative with layers
Since there are so many different combos you can try, start by thinking of ways you can most utilize the fabric you’re working with. Do you want to build a combo for your upper half… or would you rather make some sort of headpiece you can wear with anything? Research a bit on ways to accentuate the feature you’d like to focus on. 👩💻🔭
⚜️ Find funky additions
This isn’t only about destroying fabrics from the back of your closet. While some may focus on taking away, you could start by adding on. Lace cute charms through a shoelace to make a unique belt. 🎨 Paint, sketch, stamp, or sew anything you’d like on a plain t-shirt. 💎 Bedazzle that tank! You don’t need to be a patchwork expert to participate.
✂️ One cut at a time
If you’re not feeling confident to jump in head first, that’s okay! 👌 ✨ Start by making a single cut. A sleeve, a pant-leg, make a hoodie… hoodless? Like a haircut, sometimes less is more until you’re ready for the next step. 💈
As fall approaches, runways begin to cover their models with thicker pieces to prepare for cooler weather. Nonetheless, the subversive features continue to be seen in different ways. There are parallels for those in their crochet era 🧵 (deconstructed/hand-made) and cottagecore era (get crafty with flowers and ribbons🎀🌿).
Like Blair Waldorf and her signature sewn in heart 🪡💛 - you, too, should reveal the underlying vision you see within a piece.
Trends come and go, but this one in particular taught us one thing about the broader reality: you do not have to fit in the box created for you. 💘 Subversive Fashion can be used to as a creative outlet, as a way to show off your specific curves, or just to try something newww! 🌚 🤝 🌝
Will the new BlogStack writer please stand up? 🎤
My name is Erin (according to Starbucks: Aron”) Konomos. I currently work in Brand Marketing as a Graphic Designer & Stylist in SoCal. Originally from KCMO, I hold a BFA in Graphic Design from the Kansas City Art Institute. Though I majored in Design, there has always been a passion for fashion (you think I’d miss a good rhyming opportunity?). For the last four years, I’ve been combining the two while simultaneously being up to no good (& doing a gr8 job at it).
Since 2016, before each NYE, I make an outlined trend-forecast for the upcoming year. Not once have one of my predictions been wrong. Now, I can’t share all of my secrets just yet, but I’d love for you to take this journey with me and see why theBlogStack is the place to be for: Pop culture, Fashion, and World News updates.
There is some truth behind the idea that (seemingly mindless and fast-passing) trends and mini moments in society (RiiissseE n ShiinnNe, ☀️ anybody?) create waves 🌊 that change everything for the minds of the masses. So join us… we are so excited to share the HOT GOSS with you! 👭

3 QUICK WAYS TO CREATE A SUBVERSIVE PIECE… TODAY!
Make an easy long-sleeve crop. No sewing machine? Just grab some scissors and an old pair of tights. First, you’ll want to cut out the crotch (for your head) and feet area (for your arms to pass through) Try that on and reshape as needed. 💁♀️
Don’t want to recreate anything justtt in case you’d want to wear that og item later? Utilize pieces without their usual intention. Grab a skirt and see how it’d look as a tube top. ♻️ Maybe that pair of pants can be tied like an over-the-shoulder accessory. 👖 Possibilities are endless!
Guess who’s back… back again… FISHNETS! Whether you’re Patrick Star 🌊⭐ or a retired Tumblr icon 🖤… you have a pair of fishnets. Layer (🧅) and re-shape these above another article of clothing to create dimension on any outfit.
