Engagement for Engagement is the new Follow for a Follow 🔁
If you’re not supporting others in your industry, you’re not supporting yourself 💁♀️
You already know your Rules for Engagement but what about how to get that engagement going?? Birds of a feather flock together–and so do social media accounts of any niche. Let’s explore how you can network in your niche, finding clients and why “follow for a follow” is so over and “engagement for engagement” is all the rage.
Remember back before [JUMPSCARE] you could turn off follower count, when Twitter was thriving and not owned by Elon, before COVID changed everything–way back, like…when The Office was still on the air…and people used to post “follow for a follow”. The rules were simple, you mutually follow each other in order to gain followers, but things these days (fast forward through all that stuff) isn’t quite so simple. Numbers don’t matter as much without engagement.
Now you may be thinking “why does that matter?” it matters because… Engagement for engagement is the new follow for a follow.
Not only have the ways, whos, and whats of social media changed, but the reasons social media is used are different. People used social media to post about their breakfasts, and now you can check in on news and celebrities and friends, and maybe go shopping (sometimes unplanned) and end up on there for hours.

Changes in our habits and needs created updates on the platform, such as the shop feature or even encouraging engagement with the new heart that jumps out when you like something OR updates to the algorithm.
It can be hard to keep up and pivot correctly but here are some tips to keep you performing your best on social media:
💼 Networking in your niche
Find and follow accounts and people similar to yours:
want to work with
inspired by
popular in your niche/industry
Regularly interact with posts, stories, etc. to keep up your visibility
Pair up and do giveaways whenever possible!
If a something pairs really well consider reaching out to and making your partnership official in some way (collaboration ! retreats ! new content !)
🏷 Networking to find clients
Videos using your item (or products that pair well)
Look for obvious openings in videos where your product would fit perfectly
Post videos of how you or other people use the product/brand
Give a video overview of how your brand is different
Hashtags
Hashtags aren’t as effective, or important, as they used to be but a good way to use them is to follow one or actually go look at the posts under one to get a feel for what people are attracted to
Creating a custom hashtag can also be good, and an easy way for people to either leave a review or have people look at reviews
Micro-influencer Partnerships
Love a local influencer, or know someone perfect for your brand? Consider allocating some money and reaching out to create an official partnership and take a bit of the content creation off your plate
