More TikTok Alternatives & Updates 📱
What’s going on? And if I have to leave TikTok, where do I find information?? 🤔
TikTok News Update 🗞️
TikTok is a viable source of information for millions of Americans, and still has the potential to be banned in the US. While a 75 day extension was filed, that doesn’t mean that the app will be sticking around or giving into the demand to sell.
TikTok Alternatives 👇
If you use TikTok for information, news, pop culture, to talk to your community (whoever that means to you) or just to stay up to date on trends, then you’re probably looking for an alternative just in case TikTok is banned (again) in the US. 🥲
Today we have a short rundown of 3 alternatives to TikTok (all offer paid programs) and one exciting, new app! Don’t miss out on these platforms, where you, or your favorite creators, could already be posting 👀:
📝 Medium
TLDR: Blogging platform with paid program for creators
Medium has 3 sides: reading (no account, or a free account), writing (where you create your own stories, and post them for people to read, tagging categories) and members (who pay to view member only stories, get rid of ads, and contribute to paying creators for their work). Similar to blogging platforms like Substack, many independent writers can be found on Medium.
Available via desktop or app.
🪙 Patreon
TLDR: Community-based subscription platform with multiple media options
[Founded in 2013](https://www.patreon.com/about#:~:text=Over a decade,and their communities.).
There are 2 sides to Patreon—members and creators. Their platform helps creators make money through their services and products, helping earn income for its creators. Popular in the podcasting communities, Patreon provides the ability for audio, video, image, and written material.
Available via desktop or app (the app allows for creator uploads, with the exception of audio content).
✍️ Vocal
TLDR: Blogging platform with paid program for creators
Founded in 2016. An app for communities to come together. With communities already established from books to sports, and more, you can write about anything and find your people on Vocal. When creating you have the ability to write, add images or videos, or pull photos from Unsplash—see the screenshot below. They have a moderation system that reviews every story posted for community guidelines. Creators receive a small monetary payment for reads. They have a membership that allows you to create paid subscriptions for your community. Vocal also hosts challenges, which are cash prizes for writing (Vocal+ subscription often required).
Available via desktop.
🆕 Skylight [NEW!] (AT Protocol TikTok)
TLDR: WIP Video-based platform aiming to be a new, creator-forward, version of TikTok
Founded about a week ago. Skylight is run on AT Protocol’s “atmosphere” (Bluesky is hosted there as well) and is being created in real-time for beta users. Their goal is to replicate the magic of TikTok, but let creatives control their work. They are providing live updates, and requesting feedback on features and other details, on TikTok (while it’s available to US users) and Bluesky.
Right now they are working on getting it approved by the app store, and developed enough for android users.
